So, it's been a very long time since I posted. I have been thinking quite a bit about Teknologia but do not have products to show for it (yet). I started working with the Glowforge team and am more confident in my understanding of the Glowforge, however, my real passion is in exhibiting student work (art). Now I am stepping into high gear and rolling out my Phase 2 Teknologia project! My students in digital art just completed a unit titled "Empathy Portraits," where they had to identify a person they know in real life who has overcome an obstacle in their lives. To prepare, I modeled interviewing my subject for the project in front of the classes, demonstrating how to record the interview using an app on my iPhone. In previous classes, we used a simple online recorder to capture live audio. I had a student time the whole interview and it was roughly 5-6 min. I also demonstrated photographing my subject the way the assignment required. When the students went out to do the work, I will admit, I didn't listen to their interviews right away, but when I started listening to them, I could not stop. I was blown away with the vulnerability and bravery of the people sharing their stories. People sharing their experiences with addiction, divorce, coping with death, losing their job--the more I listened, the more I felt compassionate towards these people and people in general. The "empathy" portion of the unit was working! Now how do I share this work with as many people as I can? This experience is so valuable in building empathy for others, especially in a time when technology can make us feel more isolated instead of connected. My next steps are to start laying out the process of the student-led exhibition, the first phase of sharing the work. After the exhibition will be the archive of the work so it can be shared beyond the school gallery for an endless period of time. My vision for the exhibition is to QR code the interviews and display them with the portraits, so the viewers can hear the subject's stories. My vision for the archive is to have a VR gallery in ThingLink, with links to the audio recordings and some of the process behind the project. Cross-District CollaborationFeedback from Sten (Ithaca):
I worked with Sten in Phase 1 and reconnected with him tonight. We discussed my project and he gave me some great avenues to research and explore (below) Transmediation (Jon McKenzie, Cornell) - visual, interview, student creating the exhibition (public performance of it), and then creating the archive) -Have the students craft their own interview questions (I could try a bulleted list of what must be included) Knight Lab Timeline - creates a google sheet Consider a GIF of the process that can also be QR coded at the Exhibition.
