This felt like the fastest summer break ever. I focused too much on developing art curriculum and did not spend enough time making actual art. I began with instructing Ithaca College students obtaining their teaching certificates in Elementary Education, how to incorporate authentic visual art experiences into their classrooms. When that course finished, it was already the first week of July, and I had a mountain of curriculum work hours and an online grad class to complete. I was elbow deep in "paperwork" and not the kind of paper used for making art. I finally started to feel like an artist again on my road trip through the southeast. I started by exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains and created a panoramic out of individual photographs on a particularly hazy, cloudy morning. Next, I traveled to Atlanta, Georgia where I visited two exhibits: Chihuly in the Garden (Atlanta Botanical Gardens) and Sneaker Culture (High Art Museum in Atlanta). Both exhibits were phenomenal and couldn't be more different. Chihuly's glass sculptures were integrated into the landscape at the Botanical Gardens and the Sneakers were neatly organized into display cases with accompanying literature with each pair. I am excited that the Chihuly exhibit is coming to the NYC Botanical Gardens in 2017. I would like to see it again in a different setting. A bonus at the High Art Museum was an Eric Carle exhibit and the contemporary collection. Next stop, the beach. Two things I love in life: The Beach and Photography. A few times a year I get to combine those two loves and I have countless photographs to show for it. I purchased a 50mm prime lens before my trip to Topsail Island and tested it out over the duration of my vacation (I used my standard lens and iPhone camera in Cape May). I was pretty happy with the results, getting low light early morning exposures and great visual effects in mid-day light. I have a sampling of some of my favorite shots. Only a handful are from my iPhone, the majority being from my DSLR (some with slight Photoshop edits). Cape May (July 2016)Topsail Island (August 2016)After the beach, we traveled to Pittsburgh for a few days. I only used my iPhone camera for the shots in Pittsburgh (and on the road). This album also contains random images taken this summer.
