Spoonful of SugarSuppressed / CompressedPatient SpacesWinter 2018 Residency at Vermont College of Fine ArtsIn the past three weeks, I have finished up last minute preparations for attending a 10 day residency at my college. This is the second residency I have attended, the first mostly being a learning experience on how the program works. This time, I had to be prepared to present my research findings, show my work, sit through a formal review of my studio work, and have my works critiqued by professional artists. I also attended lectures, slide presentations, and workshops, as well as started planning out my future studies.
I was also fortunate to meet Jana Harper, and will be working with her in the next six months as my Artist-Teacher. I have several ideas for where my work is going and think I will end up focusing on Photography and Video work for this semester, possibly with some bookmaking aspects, too.

I finally finished all three of my major projects for grad school! I picked up my corrected prints on Friday, painted them on Saturday, glued the best print to the wood on Sunday, and screwed 250+ screws into it on Monday. I truly persisted in this work, as I have painted a "cloud" onto 5 versions of the 38"x38" square, and tested out various types of adhesives. I also sunk 200 screws into the work, and had to go to the store to buy 200 more. I enjoyed working with the hardware and might continue to explore the idea of "fasteners" in future works.
I also met with my artist teacher for the final time this semester and completed two more self-evaluations. After having to tear off my good version print, because it was bubbling up and looked terrible, I ordered two more of the same print and planned to repaint it this weekend. However, when I brought the new prints home, the print shop used a different printer and they were not the right color. They are going to print new ones for me (again) but I have to wait for them. I decided to practice paint the two desaturated versions anyway, and cut down one of them to practice attaching it to the board and to practice screwing into the work. I also had a baby version (only 12x12") and I wanted to hammer brads into it.
Some spontaneous moments in the studio were using the leftover paint on my palette to make a circle print, and photographing my paintbrushes on my bathroom sink. I also worked on the grad school checklist and prepared for my final Artist-Teacher visit on Monday. I was super fortunate to head back to Saltonstall for four days/nights over holiday break. I had an amazing studio space connected to a one bedroom apartment. I finished my second major project for grad school, titled Spoonful of Sugar. It is 27' long and two layers, so technically I worked on 54' of matte drafting film to pull this whole project together!
I also had some creative play time at Saltonstall, so I tried out the squeegee painting I had my students experiment with on our last day of school. I photographed the squeegee paintings and tested them out with multiple-exposures. Then I got back to work and painted the dust cloud on my final piece for grad school, Suppressed / Compressed. I was so inspired by my time at Saltonstall, on my last evening/morning, I painted an anatomical heart, then went home and drew elbow anatomy in permanent marker. |
