Started this week by getting my brain wrapped around a project from last year. I had this image built already as a Geometric Portrait, but figured out a new background and layering technique in Illustrator to get this "oily," iridescent looking background (30 minutes). My goal over break will be to make a new one from scratch. On my way out of work on Tuesday, it was turning into the golden hour, so I quickly got into iPhone photography mode. Not much of a time commitment, but more of recognizing the art of observation. (10 minutes) Took a break from Thanksgiving dinner prep and practiced some iPad sketching, this time using direct observation. It's a challenge! I am more confident on paper, but am giving the iPad a try. (1 hour, 30 minutes) Back to Digital Art making. Started this Geometric Portrait of my sister, based off of a snapshot I took of her on a sister beach trip. Once I had it made, I hand filled it with realistic color and then started experimenting with line and color and composition--going all the way to removing my sister and just making a repetition piece of her sunglasses. I have 30 or so files but only uploaded a sampling. (4 hours) Total time: 6 hours, 10 minutes Continuing with practicing my skills in Photoshop drawing. I can't draw my sweet pup from direct observation, so I am doing something considered a "no-no" in advanced art (drawing from an image, worse, drawing from an image on a computer screen). Considering this is just for fun and practice, I will let myself off the hook. Not sure how it would feel to draw from real life in Photoshop. Maybe I will play with that later this week. So far this drawing has only taken me a little over an hour.
Also practicing my skills at iPad drawing again. Spent about 2 hours sketching my dog in a goofy position. Also revisited the Photoshop Drawing for about another hour. I am finding I like drawing in Photoshop better, but like the transportability of the iPad. Lastly, I threw together a t-shirt design for my husband's cousin's annual holiday party (as per his request). I spent about 2 hours on it total. Total time: 7 hours Experimenting with painting in Photoshop this week. The eye is based off of Frida Kahlo's eye in one of her many self-portraits (which is on my coffee mug, so it was quite difficult to observe the fine detail). I used it as inspiration for the digital sketch. The seascape is based off of a photograph I took in San Diego several years ago. Thought I would practice atmospheric perspective since we will be starting a unit on Perspective soon.
So far this week I have made a few of panoramic images in Adobe Photoshop in preparation for my Digital Art 1 lessons. I also played with another multiple-exposure just to get my brain to remember how to make one! (3 hours) In studio world, I started thinking about the concept of Perseverance and my personal story of Perseverance. The ideas I want to move forward on first are the left foot mirrored with a right foot made out of paint brushes and the left shoulder/wedding band rib cage/zinnia sketch. (1 hour) I cleaned out my studio so I could actually work in there and whipped out ax 18x24" painting of my dog Audrey just for fun (2 hours). Used the remainder of my paint to whip out a seascape based off a photograph I took in Broadkill Beach (20 minutes). Total time: 6 Hours 30 minutes This slideshow shows the progression of my painting. Students, try to remember to develop the whole surface equally, rather than spend a lot of time in one area.
