I finally finished the shoulder blade anatomy drawing (permanent marker on vellum). Now I need to figure out the context in which I will use it. I cleaned up one version in Photoshop so it has no background. I also placed it over a watercolor background to see how it interacts with another image.
I also traveled to Skaneateles this weekend and took some photographs at the lake. Was also excited to see a new restaurant will be opening up called the Elephant and the Dove (a Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera reference). Will have to travel back in the summer to check it out. Quite a busy week in terms of art-ing. It started with some photoshop experimenting with a series of shadow images I took a while back. I don't love the end pieces, but do think I could use this method in the future.
Next, I met with an established artist, Minna Resnick, and we looked at her art and mine. She gave me some initial points to consider in my work, and I immediately tried some of her advice in a piece I made last year, Screwed. I experimented with changing the color and tone on the right side of the image and like how the turquoise version came out. I think I would try painting vellum or tissue paper and collaging over the piece instead of making it a digital edit. I also continued to work on the anatomy drawing and am over half-way done. I brought it into photoshop and cleaned it up, then experimented with turning it into a pattern and mixing it with photography. Lastly, I went to the elementary school art show and design the invitation for the Lansing High School art show, which includes an artwork from each art student in Lansing. This week my art was inspired by the initial passing of the new health care plan. I was reading NPR articles on Twitter and screenshot-ing specific parts of the text I found intriguing. Next, I wanted to start another piece of anatomy based art and began drawing a shoulder blade and shoulder joint with an exposed rib cage as well. I drew it on vellum so I would be able to lay it over photographs or other images. I still have a long way to go with the drawing and it will eventually be colored in with sepia and black permanent marker, which on vellum, allows for blending and smearing of the marker. Ironically, as I was in my studio working on the anatomy, the Huffington Post's notification about moving if you have a pre-existing condition popped up on my phone, so I screen shot that, too. Needing a break from the studio, I brought the images into my computer and worked with them in Photoshop. I'm not sure I love any one of these versions and will spend much of next week finishing the anatomy drawing on vellum.
