This week I took photographs for some digital art projects. I practiced making a mirrored polar panoramic in Photoshop. I also completed my midterms for grad school. For my postcard project, I created the next two cards in the series. I had to handwrite the text on the back of the card and prepare all the files in Photoshop for printing.

This was a week of seeing art. On Thursday, I attended the opening of Human Nature, an exhibition by artist Carla Stetson at the Handwerker Gallery. On Sunday, I went to Mass MoCA, a museum for large scale exhibitions. I enjoyed the works by Taryn Simon and Liz Glynn, both of which were inspirational to my works. I also sent out another round of postcards and worked on my process file for grad school.
This week I tried out my new phone with some concert images. I was happy with the results, as my previous phone camera were not as good with concert lighting. I also started on my midterms, which required a lot of self-reflection on my studio work this semester.
This week I continued to read essays by Sonya Huber as part of my research. I also took photographs that I could turn into panoramic images using Photoshop. I realized if I selected large areas of my work and used content aware fill, I could create abstract images. Finally, I documented feedback from my postcard project and filled out more to be sent out.
My studio time this week had to be dedicated to my research. I finished reading the Jo Spence book (Putting myself in the Picture), and then proceeded to write my research paper about it. I also prepared another set of photographs to go out in the mail on Wednesday. I gathered some initial feedback from people who received my postcards and documented that into my Process Portfolio. I greatly missed making studio work with all the reading and writing I had to complete, so I plan to get back to making art this upcoming week. I did find a deer skeleton on the side of the road which was pretty interesting to photograph.
This week I sent out my first batch of postcards and prepped the second set that will go out this week. I also played with the camera settings on my new phone (pictures of the peace lily). On Friday evening, I attended an opening at Cherry Arts for Lorrie Fredette. I also cropped and played with my watercolor paintings and learned how to create glitch art by altering the code of a jpg image. Finally, I read more of the research book I am going to soon be writing a paper on (Putting myself in the Picture, Jo Spence)
This week, I focused on mind-mapping and expanded my ideas around my theme. My mind-map is becoming a work of art in itself and I started to expand on one idea from it. I used liquid watercolor, a wet-on-wet technique, and salt to make these red blobs. I plan to cut them out and collage them physically and/or digitally in some way. I also have been reading a Jo Spence book and taking notes on her photography approaches.
What a busy artmaking summer! I completed two videos, installed and showed a 7' long print, and started researching a new perspective on my topic of Chronic Illness. I also went to several art opening events and one museum. I also read 3 memoirs and 3 journal articles related to my studies. Summer Art-makingI started by cleaning out my studio and organizing and finishing projects that were due for my residency at VCFA. I also drew knee anatomy in permanent marker and created more digital abstractions. Photography is always a part of my artmaking, so I also included a sampling of shots from this summer. My final project of the summer was creating a photographic memoir out of decades of photographs of myself. I've narrowed the collection down to a dozen and am making a postcard collection out of them. Summer ExhibitionsI was in two shows this summer and visited Ithaca Gallery Night, saw Helen Frankenthaler's Abstract Climate's show at Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), and enjoyed visiting Provincetown's gallery night.
Quite a busy month! I completed my grad school mid-terms, which involved a lot of self-reflection on the work I have accomplished over the last three months. I also continued to take photographs of my hands in manual mode with a self-timer (think about how difficult that is for a moment). I also booked a session with a professional photographer (Old Stage Photo) and staged several ideas centered on my theme of health and medical care. I am now focused on cleaning up my files, organizing them, and have resized over 100 photographs to be printed at 8x10".
I also continued with my research, reading The Body Silent, by Robert F. Murphy, and am currently reading a book about photographer Jo Spence. It was also art show month, a very exciting time for my students to put their work on display. I attended both the senior show and the general student show.
I was quite busy this week! First, I had a meeting with my Artist-Teacher and obtained feedback on my work. Then, I visited the Mezzanine Gallery at Benjamin Peters to scope out the space for my senior art students. I continued to take many photographs and make movies out of them. I also started shooting more video clips for a movie I am working on. I wrote a paper on The Kitchen Table Series (Carrie Mae Weems). Finally, I drove into Manhattan and visited The Whitney Museum of Art and MoMA.
